Shaukat Tarin - President approves summary to retain Shaukat Tarin as member NEC

ISLAMABAD: President Dr Arif Alvi on Thursday signed the summary to retain Shaukat Tarin as member of the National Economic Council (NEC).

The president gave the approval on the advice of the prime minister under Article 156 of the Constitution, the President’s media office said.

Shaukat Tarin will now be a member of the Advisory Council instead of the finance minister.

It is pertinent to mention here that the federal government on Monday appointed Shaukat Tarin as the Adviser to the Prime Minister on Finance and Revenue as his tenure as minister expired on October 16.

Under the country’s constitution, a non-elected person can be appointed as a federal minister for a six-month period, during which he or she is bound to be elected to Parliament to continue the term.

Since Tarin could not get elected to Parliament, he was made the PM’s adviser on finance and revenue to continue leading the incumbent government’s economic team.

Earlier, sources said that he will be fielded from a vacated Senate seat in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Once elected, Tarin can come back and take an oath as the finance minister again.

On October 12, Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry said Finance Minister Shaukat Tarin would contest the Senate election in order to continue serving in the incumbent capacity.
