$10bn Chinese company appoints world’s first AI robot as its CEO

In a move that seems right out of a science fiction movie, NetDragon Websoft, a Chinese metaverse company has appointed a robot, named ‘Ms Tang Yu’, as its chief executive officer (CEO).

Tang Yu, the first executive robot in human history, was designated as the virtual CEO for the company’s principal subsidiary, Fujian NetDragon Websoft. The company’s “organisational and efficiency department” will be led by Tang Yu, who would be responsible for overseeing operations valued at nearly $10 billion in the company.

According to a press release from the company, Tang Yu is expected to improve task quality, process flow, and streamline execution speed. In addition, the AI-powered humanoid robot will act as a real-time data hub and analytical tool to facilitate more efficient risk management and to support rational decision-making in day-to-day operations.

Further, the announcement stated that Tang Yu “is expected to play a critical role in the development of talents and ensuring a fair and efficient workplace for all employees.”

“We believe AI is the future of corporate management, and our appointment of Ms Tang Yu represents our commitment to truly embrace the use of AI to transform the way we operate our business, and ultimately drive our future strategic growth,” says Dr Dejian Liu, chairman of NetDragon.

The chairman also added that the company will continue to build on their algorithms under Tang Yu to create a highly transparent management model—allowing them to draw in a much wider pool of talent globally.

In 2017, Alibaba’s founder and CEO, Jack Ma, had made the prediction: “A robot will probably be on the cover of Time Magazine as the best CEO in 30 years.”
