LAHORE: Punjab government on Monday thwarted the alleged smuggling of sugar from JDW Group’s sugar mills to Quetta.

The Buzdar government in an action seized 900 maunds of sugar from JDW’s sugar mills unit 1 Rahim Yar Khan, which was being smuggled to Quetta, confirmed the provincial food department.

The truck loaded with sugar was seized at Chachran Toll Plaza during checking. The driver of the vehicle has been taken into custody. Further investigation into the matter has been launched.

Meanwhile, a spokesperson of JDW group, rebutting the news, said that the sugar was sold to a buyer, and it is his discretion to transport wherever he wants.

It is to be noted that PTI leader Jahangir Tareen is the owner of the JDW Group’s sugar mills. Jahangir Tareen and his son Ali Tareen are facing money laundering charges slapped by the FIA in the light of the sugar inquiry commission report.

Earlier, Prime Minister Imran Khan had issued directives to ensure the installation of a track and trace system to monitor sugar mills besides keeping an eye on the exact production of sugar.

PM Imran Khan chaired a review meeting regarding the steps taken by the federal government to curb the sale of sugar at higher prices and hoarding of the commodity.

The premier had also been directed to take stern legal action against hoarding of sugar and profiteering.

Imran Khan said that the elements involved in undue profiteering are foes of the people and the state will take punitive action against them.
